Last week, the NTSB released its preliminary report on the fatal Model X accident which took place in Mountain View, California earlier this year. While it did not go as far as to lay blame on any one party (that will likely happen when the full report is released later this year or next), it did lay out the timeline of events as they occurred prior to the crash. 

But while Tesla’s Autopilot system (and similar systems like it) are helping prevent many accidents and are certainly providing valuable safety systems for users around the world, a week or two of driving both with Nissan’s Pro Pilot and the Tesla’s Autopilot has given us one very simple take away: the driver alerts designed to keep drivers’ hands on the wheel and paying attention to the road ahead simply aren’t strong enough.
