Tubeless tyres will revolutionise your mountain bike riding. They don’t require an inner tube, puncture less, can be set up with lower pressures in all conditions, which allows better grip and a more comfortable ride. Not only that, they’ll automatically seal all but the most devastating gash to your tyre with their simple but effective latex composition. Tubeless tyres might seem intimidating to set up, but with a few simple tools it’s quite straight forward.

Most tyre and wheel brands now offer tubeless ready components, but if you’re not sure whether or not yours are compatible it’s always best to check with the manufacturer.
If you don’t have a track pump with an inbuilt booster cylinder an air compressor or a CO2 cartridge inflator will also work, but be careful not to over inflate the tyre and potentially damage it or your rim. Plus the sealant will cause a huge and sticky mess which will be a pain to clean up.
Tubeless sealant does have an expiry date, at which point the sealant will start to galvanise inside your tyre and will no longer create an effective seal. You should replace the sealant in the tyre at the regular intervals as specified by the issuer.
As brilliant as they are, tubeless tyres can still fail, so remember to always carry a spare inner tube and tyre boot.
